When preparing for your adventure in Japan, knowing where to start with packing can be daunting. From the serene gardens of Kyoto to the bustling Tokyo streets, packing for such a diverse and dynamic destination requires thoughtful consideration. If there’s any suggestion to take, it’s to pack light. Anything you leave behind or forget can also be bought in Japan. But if you would like more detail, below are the items that we recommend you pack before embarking on your trip to Japan:
Two Small Suitcases
You may be tempted to cram as many things as possible into large checked suitcases, from all of your clothes to necessary electronics and mementos from home. But Japan’s public transportation system is made in consideration of domestic travelers who use very small suitcases. Therefore, we recommend that you bring two smaller bags rather than large ones, as luggage space in trains can be very small. Suitcases with wheels and travel backpacks also work well, but the main point is to be able to carry your luggage up and down a set of stairs. Collapsible suitcases or duffel bags are also handy for taking home any souvenirs you purchase.
Traveling with oversized baggage is not recommended as some trains may not be able to accommodate your large luggage. We will assume that you are traveling with luggage of overall dimensions (width + height + depth) less than 160 cm (63 inches) unless explicitly stated at least 2 months before you arrive in Japan.
However, if you decide to travel with large luggage, the following Shinkansen train lines have seats with designated luggage storage: Tokaido Shinkansen (Tokyo – Osaka), Sanyo Shinkansen (Osaka – Fukuoka), and Kyushu Shinkansen (Fukuoka – Kagoshima). However, these seats require a reservation in advance and we need at least 2 months notice to try and secure these seats for you.
Essentials
When traveling to Japan, ensure you have essentials like your passports, cash and credit cards (Visa and Mastercard work the best), phones, and toiletries. It’s also crucial to check your prescription medications if any; consult your doctor to ensure you have enough for the duration of your trip and if Japan’s drug laws allow your medications. Bring all medication in its original packaging. For more information about medicine see the Ministry of Health Labor and Welfare or contact the Japanese Embassy or Japanese Consulate.
Appliances/Electricity
The voltage supply in Japan is 100V throughout the country, with a frequency of 50 Hz in the eastern regions (Tokyo, Yokohama) and 60 Hz in the western regions (Osaka, Kyoto). Thus a frequency converter must be used for sensitive equipment when traveling throughout the country. Most modern US appliances will work reasonably well in Japan, but you better check the specifications on the back of your appliance or phone the distributor to make sure. In addition, portable chargers and power banks are invaluable for everyday travel. Extensive walking, sightseeing, and picture-taking can quickly drain your phone’s battery, leaving you stranded without essential navigation and communication tools.
Clothing
Comfort should be your priority when dressing for a trip to Japan. Casual clothing is generally acceptable, but you may want to dress up a bit if you plan on dining at upscale restaurants. Shrines and temples don’t have explicit dress codes, but modest and conservative clothing is recommended to show respect, as these are places of worship. Given Japan’s frequently changing weather, clothes that can be layered will keep you comfortable throughout the day.
Shoes
Japan is a country best explored on foot, so bring comfortable shoes that you can wear almost every day. It’s customary to take off your shoes indoors so shoes that are easy to put on and take off are recommended. Theft is rare, so don’t worry too much about leaving your shoes unattended. However, if you’re still concerned, consider bringing shoes you wouldn’t mind losing.
Useful Items
A handkerchief is a must-have in Japan, as many restrooms don’t provide paper towels or hand dryers. Use it to dry your hands but avoid blowing your nose in public, as this is considered rude and unclean. Pocket tissues are also a good idea as some restrooms do not have toilet paper.
Cross-body bags, purses, or daypacks are incredibly convenient for carrying daily essentials like wallets, water bottles, handkerchiefs, and cameras. Since public trash cans are scarce, even in big cities like Tokyo, these bags can temporarily hold your trash. This is particularly useful after for example, picking up a snack at a convenience store.
Luggage Delivery Services
When traveling from city to city, handling your luggage while on public transport can be a hassle. Luckily, you can utilize the Takyubin (pronounced Ta-Q-bin) service to send your luggage between accommodations. During check-in, tell the front desk staff that you want to send your luggage to your next accommodation and ask when you need to send it so that it arrives on time. They’ll hand you a form to fill out, and then you’ll pay for the service. We recommend using this service between major cities, such as from Tokyo to Kyoto, rather than sending your luggage to more remote areas.
